The practice becomes part of Pretoria’s early legal profession, with offices near the Old Raadsaal and Church Square around the turn of the century.
The firm’s own history traces its beginnings to Hudson Findlay’s Pretoria practice around 1892, through partnerships, war, successive generations and the present-day practice.
Hudson Findlay came to Pretoria from the Cape Province and opened an attorneys practice under the name J H L Findlay. In the years that followed, the practice evolved through partnerships that included Charles James Rice, N J Macrobert and Gustav Niemeyer.
During the Anglo Boer War, Hudson Findlay locked the office and left for the Cape. The firm’s published history records that on his return after the war, he reopened the premises and found the office dusty—but otherwise untouched.

After N J Macrobert left to establish another practice, Findlay continued under the firm’s present Findlay & Niemeyer name.
Owen Price and later John Price continued the practice through much of the 20th century, extending the firm’s family-linked legal heritage.
